POMPEII: Works by David Young
Young combines traditional, figurative painting techniques with an immediate
and visceral handling of paint that explores the transitory shift of dreaming
to awkward reality, and the ideal to the human. Young’s paintings reject
the rigid adherence to the idea of the canvas as a window and, in
the process, question the necessity of foreground, middle ground
and deep space. Conversely, he embraces the modernist approach
that acknowledges the painted surface and the physicality of the
paint, creating a body of work that promotes a complex
relationship between the viewer and the subject.
