Intro to Web Design (5 weeks/ 10 hours)

Still
just surfing the Web? Dive into design with this 5-week introductory web design
class, using Dreamweaver CS5. The course will cover the development and proper
use of cascading style sheets to create a design structure, as well as
formatting of elements with CSS, image preparation and optimization,
hyperlinking, incorporating text into a design, file management, and simple
HTML coding. Students will be encouraged to develop and work on a website of
their own throughout the course.

Beginning
Digital Photography (4 weeks/ 8 hours)

Easy websites for artists and small business (4 weeks/ 8 hours)

Get your work online quickly, easily and cheaply! This course will cover registering a domain name, setting up a hosting account, and creating a simple portfolio website for an artist or small business using the popular (and free) Wordpress platform. The focus will be on getting a professional looking website up and running without tearing your hair out or spending thousands of dollars. No experience needed.

NOVEMBER
Beginning Video Making (5 weeks/ 10 hours)
Instructor: Neely Hyde

this 5-week class, participants will learn how to use a Mini-DV camera, transfer
digital video footage to a computer, edit that footage in a timeline using
Final Cut Pro, and create a project DVD. Composition, timing, lighting, editing
and sound are just a few of the concepts that will be covered. This class is
ideal for the beginning or intermediate filmmaker.

The Art of the Interview (4 weeks/ 8 hours)

The
interview or "talking head" is the basis for most film/video
projects, whether news, documentary or narrative. This class will teach
students the “art” of the interview, focusing on proper audio and lighting
techniques, which are critical to the success of this part of the production
process. Students will also learn about equipment needs and tips and tricks for
using what you have available for location and studio projects.

Zapplication Workshop

This workshop will teach students how to process digital images with Photoshop and
submit them to shows, exhibits, and festivals through the Web-based application
system, Zapplication. Participants will learn how to correct problems with
perspective, crop content, adjust brightness and contrast, and resize images to
comply with Zapplication standards. This workshop is a must for any artist
applying to 4 Bridges!

Most AVA classes are offered three times a year--Fall, Winter/Spring, and Summer. More specialized classes are offered sporadically*, according to demand. Course schedules are usually online a month or two before the beginning of a season.
Photoshop I (4 weeks / 8 hours)
This class will introduce students to the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop through hands-on instruction. Participants will learn how to create and modify image selections in various ways; remove imperfections with the clone stamp and healing brush; crop, rotate, and resize photos; create fills, shapes, and text; and utilize Photoshop’s dynamic image adjustment options. Special attention will be given to the understanding and application of layers.

Photoshop II (4 weeks / 8 hours)*
This course continues where Photoshop I left off, focusing on the
greater use of layers to make image adjustments, composite photographs,
and create photo collages. Class exercises will expand on contrast and
tonal controls, color correction, and selection refinement, and cover
the best techniques for burning and dodging, blurring and sharpening,
and preparing images for printing. Students will have additional time to
apply learned skills to creative assignments.

Beginning Digital Photography (4 weeks / 8 hours)
Utilizing practical camera-based exercises, this course will provide beginning level digital SLR camera users with an understanding of exposure, depth of field, compositional theory and the use of light, color, pattern, and motion to create interesting photographs. Time will also be devoted to creative projects and class critiques.

Digital Photography II (4 weeks / 8 hours)*
This course will delve deeper into the technical and creative aspects of digital photography, providing a greater understanding of exposure, composition, and lighting through creative assignments, projects, and technical exercises. Students should already be familiar with the basic tenets of photography and the functions of their cameras.

Intro to Web Design (5 weeks / 10 hours)
This 5-week class will introduce beginning Web enthusiasts to the
pillars of Web design, using Adobe Dreamweaver CS3. The course will

This course will explore the most basic level in the intricate realm of
Adobe Flash, an animation-based application that can be utilized for
everything from vector graphic cartooning to Web design. Topics to be
covered will include understanding and working with layers, frames, and
timelines; planning a flash movie; drawing, transforming, and tweening
symbols; working with text; incorporating audio; and simple Actionscript. Though no prior Flash experience is necessary, students
should be comfortable working with a computer.

Social Networking Workshop (1 day / 2 hours)*
This three-hour workshop will focus
on the ever-increasing popularity of social networking sites, such as
Facebook. The course will also introduce users to media-sharing and
communications applications such as Flicker, YouTube and Skype that
allow people to post photos and videos or communicate via streaming
video.

Mac 101 Workshop (1 day / 3 hours)*
Macintosh computers are the preferred platform for professional artists,
graphic designers, photographers, and videomakers around the world.
With the recent switch in the art world from film to digital, knowing
how to use a computer to promote your artwork and prepare materials for
festival and gallery applications is essential. This 3-hour workshop
will introduce participants to the Macs available at our Media Lab,
which AVA members can use for FREE. Students
will learn how to navigate the Mac file system, organize files, create
file folders, play and burn CDs and DVDs, and use basic Mac and Web
applications like iTunes, iPhoto and more. This is a great class for
everyone from complete beginners to people who just want to brush up on
their skills.

Camera to Computer Art Documentation
Workshop (1 day / 3 hours)
This workshop is specifically designed for artists who want to learn how
to masterfully document their own 2D and 3D artwork using AVA’s photo
studio and equipment. Participants will be taught how to properly light
their work, photograph it, and process the resulting digital images with
Photoshop, avoiding glare, image distortion, and undesirable color
casts for the best possible result.

This class is for any photographer seeking a solid foundation in the capabilities of Adobe Photoshop in order to manipulate, modify, or optimize photographs and digital images.

Slide Scanning Workshop (1 day / 2 hours)*
This workshop will allow participants to breathe new life into their
antiquated slides by demonstrating how to properly scan both negative
and positive film images to produce a usable high-quality digital image.

Zapplication Workshop (1 day / 3 hours)*
This workshop will teach students how to process digital images with Photoshop and submit them to shows, exhibitions, and festivals through the Web-based application system, Zapplication. Ebay & Etsy Workshop (1 day / 2 hours)
This two-hour workshop will teach participants how to promote and sell
artwork or other creative products through the Web-based marketplaces,
eBay and etsy. Students will learn how to create and setup a seller’s
account, prepare images for the Web, post products for sale, and
successfully navigate both Web sites.

Claymation / Stop-Motion Animation Class (4 weeks / 8 hours)*
In this class, students will learn how to make claymation and
stop-motion films with iMovie. Instruction will focus on a group
project that will yield a final short film. Students will learn how to
create characters, sets and backdrops; light their sets; photograph
scenes; and arrange the photos in a timeline. Kids are welcome! |
