  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How do I hang my paintings or other artwork in order to photograph them?
A: Artwork can be hung directly on the back wall of the room.  We provide a hammer and nails.  However, if your artwork is unusually large and heavy, you should bring your own hardware with you.

Q: How far in advance do I need to reserve the Clean Room?

A: You must request a reservation at least 24 hours before you want to use the facility. The Clean Room is quite popular with members.  The earlier you reserve it, the better.

Q: What kind of camera does AVA provide for people who don't have their own?
A: We have a 10 megapixel Canon XTi Digital Rebel SLR with an 18-55mm zoom lens and a 60mm macro lens.  The kit also includes a 2 gigabyte CF memory card, a shutter release remote, and a polarizing filter.

Q: What if I need help photographing my work?
A: AVA regularly offers the 3-hour Camera to Computer (C2C) Art Documentation workshop as well as a more in-depth 4-week class on the same subject.  Additionally, the lab monitor is available by appointment for basic assistance in the Clean Room.

Q: Does AVA have sweeps or backdrops for studio photography?
A: No.  If you want to use sweeps or backdrops for a shoot, you will need to bring them with you.

Q: Does AVA provide pedestals for photographing sculpture?
A: No.  Bring any pedestals you need with you.

Q: I create very large art pieces and I'm worried they won't fit in the Clean Room.  What are the dimensions of the room?
A: The back wall of the Clean Room is 9' wide and 7'5'' from floor to ceiling.  The room itself is 14'4'' long.  Anything moved into the room has to fit through the single door, which is 6'6" high and 2'8" wide.

Q: Does AVA have strobe kits, such as Dynalite or Lumedyne?
A: No. We do not have any strobe kits.  We do provide up to four 500 watt tungsten studio lights.

Q: What about photo umbrellas or softboxes?
A: We have both reflective and diffusion umbrellas as well as two softboxes. If you would like to use either, please let us know when you make your reservation at least 24-hours ahead of time so that the lab monitor has time to setup.

Q: Can I pay for the Clean Room rental before I come?
A: Yes, you can.  Scroll up on this page to where it says "Pay for Clean Room Rental."

Q: As a member, can I rent out the Clean Room for other people to use?
A: No. Only the person using the Clean Room can rent out the facility.

Q: Can I use my own camera, lights, or strobes in the Clean Room?
A: Absolutely.

Q: What if a piece of equipment is damaged during use?  Do I have to pay for it?
A: Unfortunately, yes. As a renter, you are financially responsible for any damage to equipment or the facility itself while you are using it.
