This piece was inspired by my late Grandmother. The network of cracks that overlay her face and neck are symbolic, representing the struggles and sacrifices she’s made raising 9 children. They serve as a poignant reminder of the hardships endured for a better life, infusing the piece with historical and emotional depth. The use of red in the background symbolize the vibrant spirit and resilience of Haitian culture, creating a powerful contrast with the monochrome subject.
