Earlier this summer, I had the unexpected delight to find myself and my home in the middle of a swarming emergence of the seventeen-year periodical cicadas. They were literally everywhere around my house and my yard (and sometimes inside my house). In recent months, as I explore drawing and print-making, I have found myself fascinated by this massive gathering of creatures that happens so regularly and predictably. I come from a large family that has been in one place for a very long time and find an affinity with these large, screaming bugs. They spend seventeen years underground, burrowing and eating plant roots. Then, in unison, they burst from the ground, shed their exoskeletons before screaming in a deafening chorus that echoes off the hills and ridges. After mating and laying countless eggs, just as suddenly as they appeared, they all perish and return to the soil.
