Amelia Earhart was the first woman to make a non-stop solo flight across
the Atlantic. In May 1932 she set off from Newfoundland, Canada and landed in Ireland.
The flight took almost 15 hours. For her achievement she was awarded a
Distinguished Flying Cross by the U.S. Congress.
