Acrylic & Beaded embroidery on Linen
10" Round
This embroidery work was inspired my journey as a breastfeeding mother. The labor involved with simply nourishing my children when they were young was close to 50 hours a week in their first months of life. It was an experience that made me ponder the sacrifices of all mothers - back to the earliest existence of women throughout time. The composition of the figure in this work is based upon the Venus of Willendorf - a Paleolithic carving that is estimated to be made over 30,000 years ago. Much of my work is tied to maternal states and thinking about maternal heritage. I use representations of milk as a symbol for motherhood, loss, longing, grief, and desire.
