This piece was inspired by a college entrance essay my mother wrote about a woman she found inspirational- her grandmother, my great-grandmother. Included in this collage is an excerpt of that letter, a copy of a photo of my great-grandmother when she was a teenager/young adult, and representations of items I always associated with my great grandmother- an antique pin cushion, thread, cookie tins filled with thread and buttons... and patterns. My great-grandmother was a seamstress. Each woman in my family helped inspire me and each had a hand in shaping me into the person I am. This piece is one that I feel honors my mother and her relationship with my great grandmother.
