My mom has a collection of miniature, handmade ornaments from when she was a kid that she displays every year on our Christmas tree. One of my favorites is of an angel with a gold halo, red dress, and white apron, holding a basket of goodies. I attempted to take a photograph of this sentimental trinket with a vintage camera of mine, but the lens was too close to the object to properly focus and it resulted in a blurry image. I tried several times to capture it clearly, but every attempt looked the same. Eventually, I gave in to the blurry photograph and decided to paint it as is. Doing so was an act of embracing something my mom would tell me growing up in an attempt to ease my sometimes obsessive desire for perfection — “Done is better than perfect,” she would say. I painted this piece to not only capture a familial keepsake, but to also honor that teaching of hers and how it has helped shape me as a person.
